저희 금강전자가 세계적인 브랜드인
에소테릭 대리점을 하게 되었습니다.

에소테릭은 TEAC 그룹의 작은 분야로
시작하였습니다. 90년대에 VRDS라는
CDP 매카니즘으로 에소테릭이라는
이름을 만방에 알리게 되었습니다.
생소한 VRDS 매카니즘을 알린 건
와디아에 장착하고부터입니다.
당시 이 매카니즘을 장착한 와디아의
주가는 하늘을 찌르고도 남았습니다.

그 후 티악에서 이 매카니즘을 장착한
CD Player를 생산하였으나 매카니즘에
비해 약한 DAC 부분으로 그리 큰 명성을
얻지 못하다가, 하이엔드 분야를 담당한
에소테릭에서 뛰어난 DAC와 결합한
CDP를 출시하여 세계적인 하이엔드
디지털 브랜드가 되었습니다. 지금은
분야를 넓혀 CDP뿐만 아니라 앰프, 네트웍,
최근에는 디지털로 제어하는 턴테이블까지
개발하여 세계를 놀라게 했습니다.

잠깐 VRDS 매카니즘을 살펴보겠습니다.
90년대 와디아에서 장착하여 세계에 알린
매카니즘 VRDS는 Vibration-free Rigid
Disc-clamping System의 머리글자입니다.
전체를 펼치니 의미가 다 나옵니다. 진동이
없도록 단단하게 고정해주는 디스크
클램프 시스템이라고 해석하면 될까요?
턴테이블에 클램프를 올려주면 진동에
더욱 안정적인 데에 기인하여 발상을
얻지 않았을까 생각됩니다.

CDP 트레이에 디스크를 얹고 닫은 후
회전시켜 음악을 듣도록 해주는 것이
CDP입니다. 매번 여닫고 회전하여
디스크에 수록된 정보를 읽어서 신호를
만들어야만 하는 운명을 타고난 것이지요.
30년을 사용한다면 30년을 그렇게
들락거리며 돌아야 합니다. 그러니 얼마나
잘 만들어야 합니까? 나아가 회전의 진동을
최소로 발생시키거나 소멸하도록 설계하여
음질을 더욱 좋게 하여야 합니다.

그림에서 보면 Disc만큼 큰 사이즈의
클램프로 디스크를 눌러주는데, 그 클램프가
‘Duralumin Turntable’입니다. 커다란
클램프로 눌러서 회전할 때 진동을 제어하여
더욱 정확하게 reading할 수 있게 합니다.
보통의 매카니즘은 500원짜리 동전만 한
크기의 클램프로 눌러서 덜 안정적이지요.
또한 매카니즘 전체의 진동을 소멸시키기
위하여 진동 소멸 장치를 하고 전체적으로
육중하게 제작하여 최대한 질 좋은 음질을
위한 투자를 아끼지 않았습니다. VRDS는
고가여서 싼 기기에는 장착할 수 없습니다.
